Special Offer for Nottingham Girl Geeks at Hackspace Nottingham

by Kate 24 August 2010 16:12

The very generous people at Hackspace Nottingham have offered FREE entry to all Wednesday Night Hacks in October.

For those of you who don't know a lot about Hacking and Hackspace, here's how they describe themselves:

What is Nottinghack?
A Nottingham based group for hackers, makers and crafty creatives!

What Hacking isn't!
NOT to be confused with network hacking, identity theft and computer virus' spreading etc.... Nottinghack does not condone anything illegal... Hardware Hacking is a creative, educational hobby!

Who is it for?
You'll probably be interested in electronics, robotics, DIY, hardware hacking, photography, computing, reverse engineering, prototyping, film making, animation, building RC vehicles and other creative challenges and projects.

You'll be looking for a group who can share tools, techniques and time... pool resources for bigger projects, get funding, discounts on kits and components and start classes... maybe rent a space for you to use!

Visit http://www.meetup.com/Nottinghack/ for more information, or follow them on twitter @HSNotts

Google loves Geeky Girls

by Kate 24 August 2010 15:52

Just spotted this and thought I'd share it with you lovely ladies!

Last month, Girl Geek Dinners features on Google's very own blog!

Here's a snippet of what was said:

"We’re always looking for opportunities to partner up with organizations that promote diversity and encourage women to excel in technology. Girl Geek Dinners is a world-wide initiative that does exactly that—it helps build communities of women who have a passion and interest in science, technology and other traditionally male-dominated fields by hosting social events around the world."

Buy your tickets for the next GGD NOW!

by KBlatherwick 17 August 2010 21:52

The next event will be held at 7pm on 20th September 2010 at Jam Cafe on Heathcote Street, Nottingham. Thanks to our sponsers (more on them below), tickets only cost £5 which includes a drink and a tasty finger buffet. We've tasted the menu (purely in the name of research of course) and we can confirm that it's 10/10 on the yummy scale.

The Sponsors

We're pleased to announce that Esendex have kindly agreed to sponsor the September Nottingham Geek Girl Dinner.  Obviously the fact that Gemma works for them as a software developer had nothing to do with it...

Esendex are a Nottingham-based web SMS company and a global success story, with operations in the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Germany and Austrailia. They've just set up their US operation in San Francisco and are growing rapidly as more and more businesses are using web SMS to talk to their customers and their staff. Esendex's Marketing Director Geoff Love will introduce the event on 20th September 2010 at Jam Cafe, Nottingham.  He says 'we're really pleased to be supporting the event.  Esendex shares Girl Geek's passion for technology and is always looking for new ideas to help drive our business forward, so we're looking forward to a great evening with some interesting speakers.'

Visit http://www.esendex.co.uk for the UK site, or  http://www.esendex.us/ for the US site.

The Speakers

As well as a few words from Geoff at Esendex, we've also got Julie Greensmith PhD who researches immunology and computer security, as well as riding rollercoasters in the name of academic research coming along to tell us about what she's been up to. Gemma, the rollerskating, Jeremy Kyle-loving girl geek/software developer from 'oop North' will be coming along to run an interactive session on Test Driven Development vs. Behaviour Driven Development (or TDD vs. BDD for those in the know).

The Tickets

The only way we can secure venues and catering is to offer this event as a ticket only event. We don't make any money from running the events, and it's only thanks to the sponsors that we are able to run them at all. Ticket sales will close 24 hous prior to the event in order to confirm numbers with the venue. There are 40 places available on a strictly first come first served basis.

Tickets cost £5 each and can be purchased HERE

Date Confirmed for the next Nottingham Girl Geek Dinner!

by KBlatherwick 27 July 2010 17:14

The date and venue for our next dinner has been confirmed as 7pm on 20th September 2010 at Jam Cafe, 12 Heathcote Street, Nottingham.

For those of you who haven't been along yet, it's a great venue full of comfy sofas and seriously yummy food, and a great setting for a relaxed night of meeting new people, learning something new and getting a little bit geeky!

We're in the processes of finalising speakers for the event, but as soon as these are confirmed, we'll let you know. As with previous events, it will be a ticket only affair, with the cost of your ticket getting you a drink and some food on the night.

If you (or your boss!) are interested in getting your company heard of by the most important women in technical industries in Nottingham, please get in touch!

by KBlatherwick 09 July 2010 12:11

It was great to be able to talk to Elsa face to face and for her to share her experiences of Nottingham events in the past, and Gemma was a great help with her tips she learnt from GirlGeek Manchester, Geekups and various Barcamps. Gemma recommended Google Groups as a great way to keep in touch and share ideas. This has now been set up, so please join our Google Group now!

Of course, this isn't the only way to keep in touch, to make sure you don't miss out on details of our future events, you can Email us, follow us on Twitter, join our Facebook Group or subscribe to our RSS Feed.
